A Place Where the Fog Plays Hide-and-Seek: Mundum Trail Captivates Trekkers

Bhojpur, Nepal - The Mundum Trail in eastern Nepal continues to emerge as one of the country’s most enchanting trekking destinations, offering visitors a rare blend of rolling green hills, drifting clouds, rich Kirat culture, and unspoiled Himalayan landscapes.

A recent scene from the trail perfectly captures its unique charm: thick fog weaving through emerald ridges as trekkers move along the winding path, creating the impression that the clouds themselves are playing hide-and-seek with the mountains. The breathtaking landscape has drawn growing attention from domestic and international nature lovers seeking quieter alternatives to Nepal’s more crowded trekking routes.

Located primarily in Bhojpur District and extending through the culturally significant Kirat Rai settlements, the Mundum Trail is named after the Mundum, the ancient oral scripture and spiritual tradition of the Kirat people. The route offers not only panoramic views of the eastern Himalayan range but also an opportunity to experience indigenous customs, traditional hospitality, local cuisine, and sacred cultural sites.

Tourism entrepreneurs and local communities have increasingly promoted the trail as a model for community-based and eco-friendly tourism. Unlike heavily commercialized trekking corridors, the Mundum Trail retains much of its natural serenity, with lush meadows, rhododendron forests, stone-paved paths, and mist-covered hilltops forming its distinctive identity.

The monsoon and post-monsoon seasons are considered particularly magical, as moisture-laden clouds frequently sweep across the hills, transforming the landscape into a living canvas of green slopes and floating white mist. Such conditions, while requiring proper preparation from trekkers, provide exceptional opportunities for photography, birdwatching, and immersive nature experiences.

Local tourism stakeholders believe that sustainable promotion of destinations such as the Mundum Trail can contribute significantly to rural livelihoods, cultural preservation, and conservation of fragile mountain ecosystems. Improved trail management, responsible waste practices, and community participation remain essential to ensuring that the area’s natural beauty is protected for future generations.

As Nepal continues to diversify its tourism offerings, the Mundum Trail stands out as a reminder that some of the country’s most extraordinary experiences are found not only among towering snow peaks, but also in the quiet green hills where the fog dances freely with the mountains.
