Farmer Maniram Ghimire Preserves Traditional Crop Through Kugino Cultivation in Lamjung

Lamjung - Farmer Maniram Ghimire of Dobhandanda, Madhhya Nepal Municipality–6, Lamjung, has continued cultivating kugino (Foxtail Millet) on his farmland, helping preserve traditional and locally important cereal crops. The provided image shows a field of kugino approaching maturity, reflecting agricultural practices closely connected to local food culture and crop diversity.
Kugino is a traditional grain crop cultivated in Nepal’s mid-hill and high-hill regions for generations. It is considered a crop that can be grown with relatively low water requirements and is often associated with local food security. Although cultivation traditions remain in some areas including Lamjung, various studies indicate that production has declined in recent years due to changes in land use, labor shortages, and shifting consumption patterns.
Agricultural experts consider the conservation of indigenous crop varieties, promotion of seed diversity, and revitalization of nutritious traditional food systems important for sustainable agriculture. Kugino has traditionally been used to prepare foods such as cooked grain meals, bread, and porridge-based dishes.
The cultivation effort by farmer Maniram Ghimire in Dobhandanda presents an example of preserving local agricultural heritage while encouraging future generations to value and continue traditional farming practices.
