Tea Export Resumes, but Long-Term Uncertainty Remains for Nepal’s Tea Sector

Kathmandu, Nepal - Nepal’s tea sector has received temporary relief after India relaxed recent restrictions on tea imports, allowing exports to resume following a 19-day disruption. However, tea producers, exporters, and stakeholders say the development should not be viewed as a permanent solution and are urging the Government of Nepal to pursue a long-term trade and quality recognition framework.
The export disruption began after India introduced stricter import procedures from 1 May 2026, including mandatory laboratory testing requirements for imported tea consignments. Industry representatives argued that the new measures increased delays, uncertainty, and costs during one of Nepal’s important tea harvesting periods.
According to stakeholders in Nepal’s tea industry, similar restrictions have appeared repeatedly over recent years, creating uncertainty for producers and exporters. Industry voices have emphasized that Nepal should strengthen diplomatic engagement and seek formal recognition of quality certification conducted by Nepal’s food and quality authorities to reduce dependence on repeated border-level testing.
Tea producers also warn that delays during the early “first flush” harvesting season could create ripple effects throughout the production cycle, especially during the upcoming monsoon season. Many businesses have remained cautious despite the latest relaxation and are monitoring whether border procedures become stable before resuming full-scale exports.
India remains Nepal’s dominant tea export destination, receiving the majority of Nepal’s tea shipments. Industry stakeholders argue that the current challenge highlights the need for export diversification, stronger domestic quality assurance systems, and greater investment in branding and value addition for Nepali tea in international markets.
Trade data from eastern Nepal indicate that tea continues to be one of Nepal’s significant agricultural export commodities, making uninterrupted market access crucial for thousands of farmers, workers, and tea-based enterprises.
