Kathmandu, May 6,2026 - A program focusing on land rights and social justice issues faced by marginalized Indigenous communities was organized jointly by National Indigenous Women Forum (NIWF) in collaboration with Indigenous Women Legal Awareness Group (INWOLAG) on Wednesday.
The event brought together members of the endangered Bankariya Indigenous community and Freed Kamalaris to engage in dialogue with Indigenous leaders, activists, and advocacy organizations. The primary objective of the program was to consolidate shared concerns and formally present them through a memorandum to the newly formed Government of Nepal.
Speaking at the event, Ms. Hiramothi Kumari Chaudhary, Chairperson of CPON, underscored the persistent challenges faced by Freed Kamalaris. She highlighted ongoing barriers to social reintegration, limited access to sustainable livelihoods, and structural inequalities that continue to hinder their full inclusion in society. At the same time, she acknowledged NIWF’s sustained advocacy efforts in amplifying the voices of marginalized Indigenous women.
From a local governance perspective, Mr. Prakash Thapa, Chairperson of Manohari Rural Municipality Ward No. 4, shed light on the complexities surrounding land rights for the Bankariya community. He pointed to administrative hurdles, policy gaps, and institutional constraints that have slowed progress in ensuring secure land ownership for one of Nepal’s most vulnerable Indigenous groups.
The interaction emphasized the importance of collective advocacy and dialogue in addressing overlapping issues of landlessness, marginalization, and post-liberation challenges. Participants stressed the need for coordinated efforts between government bodies, civil society, and Indigenous organizations to ensure inclusive policy implementation.IMG_20260506_190528-1778073688.jpg
The program concluded with a vote of thanks from NIWF Chairperson Ms. Suni Lama, who appreciated the engagement of all stakeholders and reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to advancing Indigenous rights and justice through continued advocacy and collaboration.
