Man Dies After Blast Fishing Incident in Arun Khola, Raising Concerns Over Illegal Practices

Palpa, April 13, 2026 - A tragic incident linked to the illegal use of explosive materials for fishing has claimed the life of a 38-year-old man in western Nepal, highlighting ongoing environmental and safety concerns surrounding destructive fishing practices.
Khum Bahadur Sunari, a resident of Nisdi Rural Municipality-5 in Palpa, was critically injured while allegedly using explosive substances to catch fish in Arun Khola, a river that forms the boundary between Nisdi Rural Municipality of Palpa and Madhyabindu Municipality-14 of Nawalparasi.
According to police reports, Sunari sustained severe injuries to his abdomen, right leg, and left arm during the incident. He was found unconscious at the site and rushed to Rampur Hospital for emergency treatment. Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries during treatment.
Another individual, identified as 35-year-old Roman Singh Kharu Magar from the same locality, was also injured in the incident. Authorities have reported that his condition remains stable and is currently under medical supervision.
The use of explosives for fishing, commonly referred to as blast fishing, is illegal in Nepal due to its devastating impact on aquatic ecosystems. Such practices not only kill fish indiscriminately-including juvenile and endangered species-but also damage river habitats and pose serious risks to human life.
This incident underscores the urgent need for stricter enforcement of environmental laws and increased community awareness about sustainable fishing practices. Experts have long warned that continued use of destructive methods threatens biodiversity and undermines the livelihoods of communities dependent on river ecosystems.
Local authorities are expected to investigate the case further, while conservationists call for coordinated action to prevent such hazardous and environmentally damaging activities in the future.
