  • Blacktopping Begins on Dhulikhel-Khawa Road Section
Blacktopping Begins on Dhulikhel-Khawa Road Section

Kavrepalanchok, Nepal - The long-awaited blacktopping work on the Dhulikhel-Khawa road section has officially begun, marking a significant step forward in improving one of the key stretches of the Araniko Highway.
According to the Division Road Office in Bhaktapur, blacktopping has started from the Dhulikhel Chowk area, with the initial phase focusing on approximately 2.5 kilometers of the total 4-kilometer road section. The remaining portion is expected to be completed in a second phase.
This road section, which connects eastern Nepal and provides access toward the northern border with China, has long suffered from delays, poor maintenance, and contractor negligence. Previous construction agreements were terminated after failing to meet deadlines, leaving the road in a deteriorated and dusty condition for years.
With a new contractor now mobilized, the project has regained momentum. Authorities have introduced traffic restrictions-particularly nighttime closures and bans on heavy vehicles-to accelerate the blacktopping process and ensure timely completion.
Environmental and Local Implications
The blacktopping of the Dhulikhel-Khawa stretch is expected to significantly reduce dust pollution, which has been a major concern for local residents, commuters, and roadside communities. Improved road conditions will likely enhance transportation efficiency, reduce vehicle emissions caused by congestion and rough surfaces, and support safer travel.
However, road expansion and paving in hilly terrains also raise environmental concerns, including slope instability, landslides, and vegetation loss. Authorities have indicated that modern techniques will be used to manage landslide risks and stabilize slopes along the roadway.
A Step Toward Better Connectivity
Once completed, the upgraded road is expected to strengthen regional connectivity, facilitate trade, and improve access for communities across Kavrepalanchok and beyond. The project also holds importance for tourism and economic activities linked to this strategic highway corridor.
