Wildfires Continue to Threaten Forest Ecosystems in Jumla

Khalanga - Jumla district is witnessing a concerning pattern of forest loss due to recurring wildfires, highlighting growing environmental vulnerabilities in Nepal’s mountainous regions. According to recent data from the Division Forest Office, a total of 330.28 hectares of forest area was damaged by wildfires during the last fiscal year, reflecting the scale of ecological damage caused by seasonal fires.
The trend appears to be continuing into the current fiscal year. Within just the first eight months, approximately 100 hectares of forest have already been affected. These incidents have been recorded across six locations within the district’s eight local levels, indicating that the risk is widespread rather than isolated.
Forest officials attribute the increasing incidents to a combination of prolonged dry conditions, human negligence, and limited early response capacity in remote areas. Wildfires not only destroy vegetation but also threaten biodiversity, degrade soil quality, and contribute to increased carbon emissions-further intensifying the impacts of climate change.
In response, the Division Forest Office has announced a targeted intervention program. A week-long forest fire control campaign is set to be conducted from Chaitra 1 to 7. The initiative aims to raise public awareness, strengthen local response mechanisms, and promote community participation in wildfire prevention and control.
Environmental experts stress that effective wildfire management in regions like Jumla requires coordinated efforts between government agencies, local communities, and conservation stakeholders. Early warning systems, improved forest monitoring, and community-based fire control strategies are considered essential to minimizing future risks.
As Nepal continues to face the growing impacts of climate variability, the situation in Jumla serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for sustainable forest management and proactive disaster preparedness.
