Nuwakot - A recent scene from a river corridor-believed to be within the vicinity of Trishuli River at Keurini/Kolputar section in Nuwakot has once again brought attention to the ongoing issue of unregulated extraction of riverbed materials such as sand, gravel, and stones.
The image shows multiple excavators actively operating within the river channel, alongside trucks transporting materials. The scale and intensity of the activity suggest systematic extraction rather than small-scale collection. However, such operations, if conducted without strict environmental oversight, raise serious concerns about river health, ecological balance, and disaster risks.
Experts in river ecology warn that excessive and poorly managed extraction can destabilize riverbanks, lower groundwater levels, and increase the risk of floods and landslides-especially in a country like Nepal, where fragile terrain and monsoon patterns already pose significant challenges.
Local communities have often voiced concerns about the long-term impacts of such activities, including the degradation of agricultural land and threats to nearby settlements. Despite existing regulations, including environmental impact assessments and extraction limits, enforcement appears weak or inconsistent in many areas.
The visual evidence raises a pressing question echoed by citizens: Where is government oversight? The apparent lack of monitoring and control highlights gaps in coordination between local governments, environmental agencies, and law enforcement bodies.
Authorities have repeatedly emphasized sustainable resource management as a national priority. However, incidents like this underline the urgent need for stronger field-level monitoring, transparent licensing processes, and community involvement in safeguarding natural resources.
As Nepal continues its development trajectory, balancing infrastructure demand with environmental sustainability remains a critical challenge. Ensuring accountability in natural resource use is not just a regulatory issue-it is fundamental to protecting ecosystems and livelihoods.
