Public Awareness Urged as Thunderstorms Increase Risk of Lightning Strikes

Kathmandu - As pre-monsoon weather patterns bring frequent thunderstorms across different parts of Nepal, authorities and safety experts are urging the public to remain cautious and follow basic safety measures to reduce the risk of lightning-related accidents.
Lightning strikes are a recurring natural hazard during thunderstorms, particularly in open areas and rural landscapes. Each year, incidents of lightning cause injuries, fatalities, and damage to property in various districts of the country. With changing weather conditions and increased thunderstorm activity during the pre-monsoon and monsoon seasons, awareness about safety practices has become increasingly important.
Experts advise that people should seek immediate shelter inside a building or a fully enclosed vehicle once thunder is heard. Staying indoors is considered one of the safest ways to avoid lightning strikes. People are also encouraged to close doors and windows and unplug electrical appliances such as televisions, computers, and chargers to prevent potential damage caused by electrical surges.
During thunderstorms, individuals should avoid contact with water sources such as taps, showers, ponds, and rivers, as lightning can travel through water and plumbing systems. Similarly, the use of wired electronic devices and landline telephones is discouraged until the storm has passed.
Safety officials also warn against taking shelter under tall trees, electric poles, or metal structures, which can attract lightning. People in open fields, hilltops, or agricultural land are particularly vulnerable and are advised to move to safer locations as quickly as possible. Riding motorcycles or bicycles in exposed areas during thunderstorms should also be avoided.
In situations where shelter is not available, experts recommend crouching low with feet together and keeping the head down to minimize contact with the ground. Lying flat on the ground is not recommended as it increases exposure to electrical currents spreading across the surface.
Authorities emphasize that public awareness and preparedness can significantly reduce the number of casualties associated with lightning strikes. Communities are encouraged to stay informed about weather forecasts and follow safety guidelines during periods of thunderstorm activity.
