Students Turn Waste into Opportunity at RU School Fest 2026 in Pokhara

Pokhara, Nepal - More than a thousand students gathered in Pokhara to demonstrate how creativity, environmental awareness, and entrepreneurship can work together during the RU School Fest 2026. The event showcased how young people are transforming waste materials into art, decorations, and marketable products, highlighting the growing role of students in promoting sustainability.
The festival was organized as part of the Green Job Creation through Recycling and Upcycling Project, led by the United Nations Development Programme with support from KOICA. Through this initiative, 15 Recycling and Upcycling (RU) Clubs have been established across schools to encourage practical environmental action and innovation among students.
During the event, students displayed products made from discarded materials, showing how waste can be turned into useful and even income-generating items. Organizers said the initiative aims not only to promote recycling but also to build leadership skills and entrepreneurial thinking among young people.
The program is being implemented in coordination with the Pokhara Metropolitan City Office and local partners including Doko Recyclers. Support has also come from the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Nepal.
According to organizers, RU Clubs are helping schools introduce practices such as daily waste segregation, recycling, and student-led initiatives that encourage sustainable habits. Senior students are also passing leadership roles to younger classmates, ensuring continuity of the activities.
The initiative reflects a broader push to promote a circular economy in Nepal, where materials are reused and repurposed rather than discarded. By encouraging students to experiment with recycling and upcycling, the program aims to nurture a generation that sees environmental challenges as opportunities for innovation and responsible development.
Observers say programs like RU School Fest demonstrate how schools can serve as centers for climate awareness and practical solutions, with students taking the lead in shaping more sustainable communities.
