Trash Barriers Installed in Kathmandu Rivers to Control Floating Waste

Kathmandu - The Bagmati Civilization Integrated Development Committee has installed trash barriers in several rivers across Kathmandu in an effort to control floating waste and improve river cleanliness.
The committee, which operates under the Ministry of Urban Development, reported that the barriers have been placed strategically to intercept plastic and other floating debris before they spread further downstream. According to officials, the installation project cost approximately 6.5 million Nepali rupees.
Authorities say the barriers are expected to make waste collection easier and support ongoing river conservation initiatives in the Kathmandu Valley. Urban rivers in the area, including those connected to the Bagmati system, have long faced challenges from unmanaged solid waste and rapid urbanization.
Environmental observers note that while the installation of trash barriers is a practical step toward reducing visible pollution, sustained waste management practices, public awareness, and coordinated municipal action will be necessary to bring long-term improvements to river health.
The initiative forms part of broader efforts to restore river ecosystems and maintain cleaner urban waterways in Nepal’s capital.
