Bakas Renewable Energy Limited Concludes 9th AGM, Moves to Launch Nepal’s First Wood Pellet Industry

Kathmandu - Bakas Renewable Energy Limited (BREPL) concluded its 9th Annual General Meeting today, announcing progress on what could become Nepal’s first commercial wood pellet production project.
The company plans to produce approximately 10,500 metric tons of biomass pellets annually by utilizing around 30,000 metric tons of undergrowth biomass from the Sagarnath Forestry Development Project (SFDP), a 13,500-hectare government-managed plantation in the central Terai. The undergrowth, currently considered a major fire hazard, is removed each year at significant cost.
By converting this surplus biomass into renewable fuel, BREPL aims to reduce wildfire risks while introducing a proven clean energy technology widely used in Europe and the United States. Wood pellets, made from compressed biomass or sawdust, are recognized globally as an environmentally friendly alternative to fossil fuels that can help lower greenhouse gas emissions.
If implemented successfully, the initiative could mark a milestone in Nepal’s renewable energy development while supporting sustainable forest management.
