Nepal Becomes First Asian Country to Offer LEAF Credits, Marking Milestone in Forest Protection

Kathmandu - Nepal has taken a significant step forward in global climate action by formally signing an agreement with the LEAF Coalition (Lowering Emissions by Accelerating Forest Finance), reinforcing its long-standing commitment to forest conservation and climate change mitigation.
With forests covering around 45 percent of the country’s total land area, Nepal has positioned itself as a regional leader in nature-based climate solutions. By joining the LEAF Coalition, Nepal becomes the first country in Asia to offer LEAF credits, a mechanism designed to generate results-based finance by reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation.
The agreement signals international recognition of Nepal’s forest governance efforts, particularly its community-based forest management model, which has played a central role in restoring degraded landscapes while supporting rural livelihoods. LEAF credits are awarded only when verified emissions reductions are achieved, aligning forest protection with measurable climate outcomes.
Norway, a key supporter of global forest and climate initiatives, has expressed its commitment to supporting Nepal through this process. The partnership reflects growing confidence among international partners in Nepal’s ability to balance conservation goals with transparent and accountable environmental governance.
Climate experts view Nepal’s entry into the LEAF Coalition as more than a financial arrangement. It is seen as a strategic move that strengthens the link between forest conservation, climate resilience, and sustainable development-particularly for countries that are highly vulnerable to climate impacts despite contributing minimally to global emissions.
As global attention increasingly turns toward nature-based solutions, Nepal’s participation in the LEAF Coalition sets a precedent for other forest-rich developing nations in Asia. The agreement underscores how protecting forests can serve both national interests and global climate goals when supported by credible international mechanisms.
