NEW YORK, September 19, 2026 - As world leaders prepare to gather at United Nations Headquarters for the high-level week of the 81st UN General Assembly, the United Nations has renewed its call for accelerated action to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030.
The call came during the 2026 SDG Moment, held on September 18 under the theme “Together, We Can Do It.” Convened by UN Secretary-General António Guterres, the event highlighted progress made towards the 2030 Agenda while drawing attention to the significant challenges still slowing global development.
“The Sustainable Development Goals are our greatest opportunity to build a fairer, safer and more sustainable world,” Guterres said, urging governments to honor the commitments made when the Goals were adopted and to accelerate implementation.
The UN's Sustainable Development Goals Report 2026 shows that progress is being made, but remains too slow and uneven. Of the 139 SDG targets with sufficient trend data, only 36 percent are on track or showing moderate progress, while 49 percent are progressing too slowly and 15 percent have regressed from their 2015 baselines.
The SDG Moment also emphasized that recent crises-including climate change, conflict, inequality, debt pressures and financing shortfalls-are putting additional pressure on development gains. At the same time, the UN stressed that practical solutions are already delivering results and can be expanded through stronger investment, partnerships, innovation and international cooperation.
The 2026 SDG Moment brought together governments, civil society, youth, the private sector, experts and other stakeholders to discuss ways to overcome structural barriers and accelerate action across the Goals. The UN described the gathering as an important milestone on the road towards the 2027 SDG Summit and the decisive final stretch towards 2030.
The 81st session of the UN General Assembly opened on September 8, while its high-level General Debate is scheduled for September 22-28, 2026, bringing heads of state and government and other senior representatives to New York.
With less than four years remaining to 2030, the message from the SDG Moment was clear: achieving the global goals will require faster implementation, adequate financing and sustained international cooperation to ensure that development progress reaches those most vulnerable to poverty, inequality, climate impacts and other global crises.
