Nationwide Programs Mark 28th Earthquake Safety Day; Major Event Held in Kathmandu

Kathmandu, Nepal - Today, Nepal observed the 28th Earthquake Safety Day with a series of events and programs held across the country to promote disaster preparedness and resilience.
The central ceremony took place at Khula Manch in Kathmandu after 1:00 PM, where government officials, disaster management experts, and civil society representatives gathered to emphasize the importance of earthquake readiness. Before the main event, an earthquake safety rally began at Basantapur and moved through Akash Bhairav, Indra Chowk, and Asan before arriving at Khula Manch, drawing participation from citizens and youth groups committed to spreading awareness.
Earlier in the morning, Kathmandu Metropolitan City hosted an earthquake remembrance program at the city’s Geography Park. Distinguished dignitaries attended the event, including Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal, Home Secretary Rajkumar Shrestha, Executive Chief of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA), Er. Dinesh Prasad Bhatt, and Deputy Mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City, Sunita Dangol.
In their remarks, speakers highlighted the ongoing need for improved community preparedness, resilient infrastructure, and strengthening coordination among all levels of government to reduce the risk posed by earthquakes. They also paid tribute to the thousands of lives lost and the widespread damage caused by the historic earthquake of Magh 2, 1990 BS - a catastrophe that is still deeply rooted in the nation’s collective memory.
This year’s Earthquake Safety Day slogan - “Preparedness of all levels of government, preparedness of all citizens: An earthquake-resilient Nepal is now our responsibility” - underscores the shared role of government bodies and citizens alike in safeguarding communities from future seismic hazards.
Earthquake Safety Day has been observed annually since 2055 BS in memory of the devastating 1990 BS quake, serving as a reminder of Nepal’s vulnerability to seismic activity and the importance of systematic preparedness and risk reduction.
