Deukhuri, Dang - At a time when farmers across Nepal are searching for sustainable and climate-resilient livelihood options, Kishor Panday’s journey in professional apiculture offers a compelling example of how traditional practices can be transformed into profitable green enterprises.
Starting his beekeeping journey in 2070 B.S., Panday has gradually expanded his operation to 80 bee houses, generating an annual income of approximately Rs. 9 lakhs. By adopting a scientific and professional approach to apiculture, he has demonstrated that beekeeping, when managed strategically, can become a reliable and scalable source of income for rural households.
A key factor behind his success is the use of the Apis mellifera species, known for its higher honey yield compared to indigenous varieties. Panday practices migratory beekeeping, carefully moving his bee colonies between Dang and Rupandehi in line with seasonal flowering patterns. This approach maximizes nectar availability, strengthens colony health, and ensures consistently high production levels.
On average, his honey is sold at Rs. 600 per kilogram, reflecting both quality production and growing market demand. Beyond income generation, Panday’s work also contributes to improved pollination, benefiting local agriculture and enhancing ecosystem health.
His model aligns strongly with the principles of climate-smart agriculture, which promotes livelihoods that adapt to climate variability while reducing environmental stress. The initiative, supported under the Climate Smart Agriculture Program in collaboration with Good Neighbors International Nepal, UN-Habitat Nepal, and CSRC, highlights how nature-based solutions can strengthen rural resilience.
Panday’s success story is now serving as a practical learning model for upcoming interventions in Thulichaur, where similar approaches are planned to empower farmers, diversify incomes, and promote sustainable farming systems.
As Nepal faces the dual challenges of climate change and rural unemployment, examples like Kishor Panday’s professional apiculture demonstrate that sustainable agriculture, when backed by knowledge and institutional support, can offer real economic and environmental returns.
