Stockholm, August 25,2925 – Rivers, the lifelines of ecosystems and communities, are under increasing stress from climate change, pollution, and unsustainable development. To address these challenges, a special session titled “River Health Journeys: Learning from the Past, Shaping the Future” will be held tomorrow at World Water Week 2025 in Stockholm.
The session, scheduled for 26 August from 14:00 to 15:30 (local time) at C2, Level 2, will bring together global experts and practitioners from Wales, Australia, Africa, and Ireland. Through an interactive timeline workshop, participants will revisit key experiences from their respective regions, exchange practical knowledge, and explore how past successes and failures can guide future action for healthier rivers worldwide.
Organized in collaboration with Arup, Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water, Inland Fisheries Ireland, The Nature Conservancy, and the Environment Agency (UK), the dialogue seeks to foster innovative approaches to restoring and safeguarding river ecosystems.
As rivers face mounting pressures from climate extremes and rising water demand, the session aims to inspire collective solutions that link river health to broader environmental resilience. By learning from diverse regional experiences, the initiative hopes to advance a shared vision where rivers continue to sustain life, livelihoods, and biodiversity.
The event is part of the #WorldWaterWeek2025 theme of #WaterForClimateAction, highlighting the critical role of water management in climate adaptation and sustainable development.
