In a move to promote traditional crops and enhance food security, the Government of Nepal has officially declared Shrawan 16 (July 31) as National Kodo (Millet) Day.
The announcement was made by government spokesperson and Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Prithvi Subba Gurung, following a Cabinet decision. The initiative, proposed by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development, aims to raise awareness about the nutritional, cultural, and economic importance of millet in Nepal’s agricultural landscape.
Kodo, a resilient and climate-friendly crop, plays a vital role in supporting livelihoods in rural and hilly regions. With this annual observance, the government seeks to encourage its production, consumption, and conservation amid rising concerns over food diversity and sustainability.
