  • Six Economies Move Up in World Bank’s 2026 Income Classification Update
Six Economies Move Up in World Bank’s 2026 Income Classification Update

Kathmandu, July 13 - The World Bank Group has released its latest annual Country Income Classifications, announcing that six economies have advanced to a higher income category in the 2026 update, while no country moved to a lower classification.
Published annually since 1987, the World Bank's Development Data Group updates the classifications every July 1 using the previous calendar year's Gross National Income (GNI) per capita estimates. The system categorizes economies into four groups: low-income, lower-middle-income, upper-middle-income, and high-income.
This year's assessment covered 218 economies, reflecting shifts in national economic performance and statistical revisions. According to the World Bank, each country's movement represents a distinct economic story-ranging from recovery after economic crises and strong export-led growth to improved national accounts that revealed economies to be significantly larger than previously estimated.
The income classifications play a critical role in global development by informing eligibility for concessional financing, development assistance, and international policy analysis. Governments, development partners, researchers, and financial institutions also use the classifications to monitor long-term economic progress and shape development strategies.
While moving into a higher income category is an important milestone, the World Bank emphasizes that income classification alone does not fully capture a country's overall development, as challenges related to inequality, poverty, climate resilience, and sustainable growth often persist even as national incomes rise.
The latest update provides policymakers and development stakeholders with an important benchmark for assessing economic progress while highlighting the diverse pathways countries follow on their development journey.
