Kathmandu, July 30 (Ecosphere News) - Trees do far more than provide shade, absorb carbon dioxide, and produce oxygen. Scientists studying forest hydrology have found that mature trees play a crucial role in controlling how rainfall moves through a forest ecosystem, effectively acting as natural water-management systems that protect soil, nourish roots, and regulate moisture distribution.
When rain falls on a forest, it does not simply reach the ground evenly. The structure of a tree — from its leaves and branches to its bark and root system — influences where and how water is delivered.
Canopy reduces the force of rainfall
The upper canopy is the first line of defence. Leaves and branches intercept rainfall, slowing down large and fast-moving raindrops before they strike the ground. This process helps reduce soil erosion, minimise surface runoff, and protect delicate microorganisms living in the forest floor.
Drip-line directs water to feeder roots
Researchers have observed that much of the intercepted rainwater is redirected toward the drip-line, the outer edge of a tree’s canopy. This area contains a high concentration of fine feeder roots, which are responsible for absorbing water and nutrients. By concentrating rainfall around this zone, trees improve the efficiency of water uptake and help maintain their own growth and survival.
Bark channels water toward deeper roots
A smaller portion of rainwater flows down the trunk through a process known as stemflow. As water travels along the bark, it can carry dissolved organic matter and nutrients toward the soil near the trunk, where deeper structural roots can access moisture stored below the surface.
Forests as hydrological engineers
Environmental experts increasingly describe forests as natural hydrological engineers because of their ability to influence infiltration, groundwater recharge, soil stability, and local water cycles. Healthy tree cover can improve watershed function, reduce flood risks, and enhance the resilience of ecosystems facing climate change, drought, and extreme rainfall events.
The findings highlight the importance of forest conservation, reforestation, and nature-based solutions in sustainable water management. Protecting mature trees not only supports biodiversity and carbon storage but also helps maintain the natural processes that regulate water across landscapes and communities.
