Sindhupalchok, June 4, 2025
Sukute, a picturesque riverside destination in Sindhupalchok, Nepal, is rapidly emerging as a prime adventure tourism hub, attracting both domestic and international tourists. Renowned for its thrilling rafting experiences on the Sunkoshi and Bhotekoshi rivers, the area has become a haven for adventure enthusiasts seeking to beat the summer heat.

Globally recognized as the seventh-best rafting destination, the Sunkoshi and Bhotekoshi rivers draw hundreds of tourists daily, highlighting Nepal’s standing as a premier destination for adventure sports. According to the Sindhu Sukute Tourism Business Association, the number of visitors engaging in rafting has increased significantly compared to previous years, with around 75% of participants being domestic tourists.

Beyond rafting, Sukute offers a variety of adventure activities, including mountain biking, bungee jumping, canyoning, rock climbing, jungle safaris, and serene beach stays. These activities, coupled with the services of over two dozen resorts, such as Sukute Resort, Sukute Beach, and Sunkoshi Beach Resort, have transformed Sukute into a flourishing tourism hub.

Economic and Municipal Development

The growth of tourism in Sukute has also contributed to the economic development of the region. Resorts in the area pay a nominal fee of NPR 100 per tourist to the Chautara Sangachowkgadhi Municipality, generating an annual revenue of approximately NPR 10 million. Nearly half of this revenue is allocated to the development of the Sukute Corridor, with the rest supporting other municipal development projects.

The municipality has prioritized establishing Sukute as a premier adventure tourism destination, leveraging its natural beauty and thrilling experiences to attract more visitors.

Challenges and Opportunities

Despite its growing popularity, Sukute faces significant challenges, primarily due to poor road infrastructure. The Surya Binayak-Dhulikhel-Khawabhazaar road, a key access route to Sukute, remains in a dilapidated condition, hindering the arrival of tourists. Addressing this issue could dramatically improve accessibility, enabling tourists to reach Sukute from Kathmandu in under two hours.

Local tourism stakeholders have urged authorities to expedite road upgrades, emphasizing that improved infrastructure could lead to a substantial increase in tourist numbers, further boosting the local economy and supporting the region’s development.

A Promising Future for Adventure Tourism

Sukute’s blend of natural beauty, adventure activities, and economic potential underscores its role as a rising star in Nepal’s tourism sector. With strategic investment in infrastructure and sustainable tourism practices, Sukute is poised to solidify its position as a global adventure tourism destination, drawing visitors from around the world and contributing to the socio-economic development of the region.

This report highlights the critical interplay between tourism, infrastructure, and development, showcasing Sukute as a model for sustainable tourism growth in Nepal.
