Kathmandu, February 26, 2025 - Nepal is immersed in the celebration of Maha Shivaratri, a sacred Hindu festival dedicated to Lord Shiva, with vibrant rituals and cultural activities taking place across the country. The Pashupatinath Temple in Kathmandu, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most revered Shiva temples in the world, is the focal point of this year's festivities.

Significance of Maha Shivaratri

Maha Shivaratri, meaning "The Great Night of Shiva," holds profound religious and spiritual importance. The festival commemorates key events in Hindu mythology, including the divine marriage of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, Shiva's cosmic dance of creation and destruction (Tandava), and his act of consuming the poison during the churning of the ocean to save the world.

Devotees believe that observing fasts, performing midnight prayers, and engaging in meditation on this day brings spiritual enlightenment and blessings from Lord Shiva.

Pashupatinath Temple: The Heart of the Celebration

This year, the Pashupatinath Temple has seen an influx of thousands of devotees from Nepal, India, and other neighboring countries. Worshippers have been lining up since early morning to offer sacred items such as Bel Patra (bilva leaves), milk, and flowers to the temple's Shiva Lingam.

The temple premises are adorned with lights and decorative patterns, creating a serene yet festive atmosphere. Ascetics and sadhus, with ash-covered bodies and matted hair, have gathered in large numbers, adding to the spiritual significance of the event.

Nightlong Vigil and Cultural Festivities

As part of the tradition, devotees are observing nightlong vigils, engaging in chants of "Om Namah Shivaya" and recitations of Shiva scriptures. The temple has also organized cultural performances, including classical music, dance, and storytelling, enhancing the devotional ambiance.

According to the Drik Panchang, the Nishita Kaal Puja (midnight worship) is scheduled from 11:51 PM to 12:41 AM, considered the most auspicious time for prayers.

Unique Traditions in Nepal

In addition to temple rituals, children across Nepal participate in a playful tradition by creating roadblocks with ropes or barriers to collect donations from passersby. This custom reflects the community engagement and lighthearted spirit that accompany the festival.

A Global Attraction

Maha Shivaratri at Pashupatinath Temple has become a significant global event, drawing pilgrims and tourists alike to experience Nepal's rich cultural and spiritual heritage. With enhanced security and arrangements by the government, the celebration is proceeding smoothly, ensuring safety and convenience for all participants.

Closing Note

Maha Shivaratri 2025 is a testament to Nepal's deep-rooted traditions and spiritual devotion. As the country celebrates the Great Night of Shiva, the Pashupatinath Temple stands as a beacon of faith, unity, and cultural pride, offering a profound experience to all who partake in its sacred rituals.
