Kathmandu, October 29, 2026 - Nepal has called for stronger international cooperation, accessible climate finance and climate justice to protect fragile mountain ecosystems and address the growing impacts of climate change, as Minister for Foreign Affairs Shisir Khanal addressed the National Climate Summit 2026 as Chief Guest in Kathmandu today.
The summit witnessed the launch of the Mountain Strategy and key climate policy documents, marking an important step in strengthening Nepal’s climate agenda ahead of the 31st United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP31), scheduled to take place in Antalya, Türkiye.
Addressing the gathering, Minister Khanal highlighted the devastating consequences of the recent Bhote Koshi disaster, which reportedly caused an estimated US$4.8 billion in damages. He stressed that the catastrophe underscored the vulnerability of Himalayan ecosystems and the urgent need to recognise mountain conservation as a shared global responsibility.
The Foreign Minister also welcomed the provisional allocation of US$21.6 million to Nepal from the Fund for Responding to Loss and Damage, describing it as a significant milestone in international climate action. He called on the international community to ensure that climate-vulnerable countries receive predictable, grant-based financial support through simplified and accessible procedures.
