Nepal MP Ashika Tamang Says She Will Not Be Silenced by Online Criticism

Kathmandu, Nepal - Member of Parliament Ashika Tamang has spoken out against what she describes as growing opposition, the circulation of clips from her old videos, and attempts to damage her reputation through social media.
In a public statement, Tamang said that some individuals were allegedly being hired to edit clips from her previous videos and make them viral to tarnish her image. She also reflected on public expectations of elected representatives, arguing that MPs should not be expected merely to enjoy privileges, sit comfortably in Singha Durbar, and remain confined to formal parliamentary duties.
Emphasising that an elected representative should remain connected to society, Tamang said that the conventional expectations of parliamentary conduct might apply to others but would not define her approach to public service.
“Ashika Tamang is not just an individual; she is the flame of change burning within you and me-a flame that can erupt at any time, anywhere,” she said, expressing her determination to continue standing for change despite criticism.
Her statement highlights the tensions that can arise between public scrutiny, political accountability, and an elected representative's personal approach to political engagement. While criticism and debate are integral to a democratic society, claims of coordinated efforts to damage someone's reputation require independent verification.
The statement underscores Tamang's message that she intends to remain outspoken and connected to the public rather than conforming to expectations that she believes limit the role of an elected representative.
