Continuous rainfall has caused a sharp rise in the water level of the Kaligandaki River, leading to flooding in Setibeni Bazaar of Galyang Municipality-5, Syangja District. The inundation has affected around 35 households, with floodwater entering approximately 15 to 16 houses and shops. The premises of the historic Setibeni Temple have also been submerged.
Local residents have been living in fear as the river continues to swell and floodwaters spread through the settlement. In response to the growing risk, the Nepal Police launched an immediate rescue operation in the affected area.
According to the District Police Office, Syangja, a four-member rescue team from Pidikhola Police Post, led by Assistant Sub-Inspector Padam Thapa, successfully rescued 56-year-old local resident Rannata Neupane and moved her to a safer location. The police team also rescued two priests who had been trapped on the second floor of the Setibeni Temple.
Authorities stated that security personnel remain deployed in the area, where they are conducting continuous monitoring, maintaining security vigilance, and coordinating emergency response efforts.
With the Kaligandaki River still flowing at an elevated level, residents of Setibeni Bazaar and nearby riverside settlements have been urged to remain on high alert, stay in safe locations, and avoid unnecessary movement near the riverbanks.
Meanwhile, Ghanshyam Bhattarai, Ward Chairperson of Galyang Municipality-5, said that coordination is underway with all relevant agencies to manage the affected market area, minimize potential human losses, and strengthen rescue and relief operations. He urged the public to strictly follow notices issued by the local administration and security agencies and to avoid entering high-risk areas until the river flow returns to normal.
The incident once again highlights the increasing vulnerability of riverbank settlements in Nepal’s mid-hill regions during the monsoon season, where intense rainfall and rising river flows continue to pose significant risks to communities, infrastructure, and cultural heritage sites.
