ASEAN Webinar to Highlight Practical Tools for Assessing Invasive Alien Species Risks

Kathmandu -The ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity (ACB) is set to convene an online webinar on Invasive Alien Species (IAS) Risk Assessment Tools on 15 October 2026 at 2:00 p.m. (GMT+8), bringing together experts and stakeholders to strengthen understanding and application of tools for identifying and assessing the risks posed by invasive alien species.
Invasive alien species remain a major concern for biodiversity, food security and human well-being. When introduced outside their natural range, some alien species can become invasive, outcompeting native species, disrupting ecosystem processes, affecting agricultural production and potentially contributing to the spread or transmission of diseases.
The webinar, titled “Assessing the Threats: Practical Tools for Invasive Alien Species Risks,” will introduce ASEAN stakeholders to a range of existing IAS risk-assessment tools and approaches. Experts will share practical experiences and case studies demonstrating how such tools can be applied to assess potential threats and support informed decision-making.
The event will also provide an opportunity to explore how these tools can be adopted at the local level and how regional cooperation on IAS risk screening can be strengthened across ASEAN.
Effective risk assessment can help countries identify potentially harmful species before they become widespread, enabling governments and conservation practitioners to prioritize prevention, early detection, management and control measures.
The webinar highlights the importance of moving beyond awareness of invasive alien species toward the practical use of reliable assessment tools to support evidence-based biodiversity conservation and ecosystem management.
Interested participants can register for the one-day online event through the ACB registration link provided by the organizers.
