Kathmandu, Nepal - The International Labour Organization (ILO) Nepal has convened a two-day national workshop bringing together representatives from government agencies, employers, workers' organizations, and civil society to strengthen coordinated efforts aimed at eliminating child labour in Nepal's carpet and brick industries.
The workshop focused on the two priority sectors identified under Nepal's National Master Plan on the Elimination of Child Labour, with participants working to develop integrated and practical strategies to prevent child labour while promoting decent work and responsible business practices.
During the programme, participants enhanced their understanding of international labour standards, Nepal's legal framework, and the ILO's Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work. Discussions also emphasized the importance of sector-specific action plans that can be effectively implemented through collaboration among key stakeholders.
The initiative comes at a critical time as Nepal prepares for its graduation from Least Developed Country (LDC) status. Strengthening compliance with fundamental labour rights is considered essential not only for safeguarding children's rights and improving workplace conditions but also for enhancing the global competitiveness of Nepal's carpet and brick industries within international supply chains.
The workshop underscored that eliminating child labour requires sustained social dialogue, stronger enforcement of labour standards, and shared responsibility among government, businesses, workers, and civil society. Participants reaffirmed their commitment to creating workplaces free from child labour, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to access education, grow in a safe environment, and realize their full potential.
