Municipal Leaders in Madhyapur Thimi Strengthen Capacity for Nature-Based Urban Climate Solutions

The Kathmandu Valley Development Authority (KVDA), under its Urban Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) Project, conducted a specialized Urban Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) training for members of the municipal executive council and social and environmental leaders of Madhyapur Thimi Municipality on 28 June 2026. The training was organized with technical support from UN-Habitat Nepal as part of ongoing efforts to enhance climate resilience through nature-based urban development.
The capacity-building program aimed to improve the understanding and practical application of Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) and Nature-based Solutions (NbS) among key municipal stakeholders responsible for planning, governance, and environmental management.
As the project's technical partner, UN-Habitat Nepal supported the development of a comprehensive package of EbA training materials through an extensive process involving expert reviews, stakeholder consultations, and multiple revisions. The materials were specifically tailored for four stakeholder groups—local communities, political leaders, municipal technical officers, and KVDA officials—to address their distinct roles in advancing ecosystem-based approaches for climate-resilient urban development.
During the training, participants discussed strategies for integrating ecosystem-based approaches into municipal planning and budgeting, identifying, documenting, protecting, and restoring urban ecosystems, strengthening collaboration among government institutions and communities, and promoting climate-resilient urban development across the Kathmandu Valley.
The discussions emphasized that healthy urban ecosystems play a critical role in reducing climate risks while enhancing the quality of life in rapidly growing cities. Participants also highlighted the need for stronger coordination among local governments, technical agencies, and communities to effectively implement nature-based solutions that can improve urban resilience against the impacts of climate change.
The Urban EbA initiative reflects Nepal's growing focus on incorporating ecological principles into urban planning, recognizing that sustainable cities depend not only on physical infrastructure but also on the conservation and restoration of natural ecosystems.
