Pokhara, Nepal – A major infrastructure project aimed at enhancing sustainable tourism and improving access to the renowned Panchase region has moved forward after Pokhara Metropolitan City approved the Initial Environmental Examination (IEE) report for the proposed development.
The project, estimated to cost approximately NPR 1.30 billion, will establish a special access route linking the Pokhara Valley with Panchase, a popular tourism destination located at the confluence of Kaski, Parbat, and Syangja districts. The initiative includes the construction of a model road from Ghatichhina to Bhanjyang, a modern cycling lane, and a study center dedicated to environmental and biodiversity research.
The decision was made during the executive meeting of Pokhara Metropolitan City held on Thursday. According to Mayor Dhanraj Acharya, the project is being implemented under the Regional Urban Development Project and the Urban Resilience and Livelihood Improvement Project with financial assistance from the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
Mayor Acharya stated that the project is expected to significantly contribute to tourism promotion in Pokhara while supporting sustainable urban transportation and the development of environmentally friendly infrastructure. He further emphasized that the study center will strengthen efforts to understand and conserve the region’s rich biodiversity.
Panchase, situated at an elevation of 2,517 meters above sea level, is widely recognized for its panoramic mountain views, ecological significance, and cultural heritage. The area is particularly noted for its exceptional floral diversity, with experts reporting the presence of 143 species of orchids, making it one of Nepal’s important biodiversity hotspots.
Environmentalists and tourism stakeholders believe that if implemented responsibly, the project could serve as a model for balancing tourism development with environmental conservation. The inclusion of cycling infrastructure and biodiversity research facilities reflects a growing emphasis on sustainable and nature-based tourism in Nepal.
As Panchase continues to attract domestic and international visitors, the new access route is expected to improve connectivity while creating opportunities for local economic development and environmental education in the region.
