Kathmandu, Nepal - A heartbreaking picture of Nepal’s foreign employment reality has once again come to light, as the dead bodies of 1,290 Nepali citizens who had gone abroad for employment have been brought back to Nepal during the last 10 months, according to data shared by Foreign Employment Board Nepal (FEB Nepal).
The figure reflects the continued human cost behind Nepal’s labor migration sector, where thousands of young Nepalis leave the country every year in search of better economic opportunities for themselves and their families. While foreign employment remains one of Nepal’s major sources of remittance income, the increasing number of deaths abroad has raised serious concerns about worker safety, mental health, labor rights, and working conditions in destination countries.
Many migrant workers travel to Gulf nations, Malaysia, and other countries for employment in construction, manufacturing, security, hospitality, and domestic work sectors. However, difficult working environments, workplace accidents, health complications, stress, and inadequate access to medical and social protection continue to affect many workers abroad.
The return of bodies instead of dreams has left hundreds of Nepali families in grief and economic uncertainty. Experts and labor rights advocates have repeatedly stressed the need for stronger diplomatic coordination, improved labor agreements, better pre-departure orientation, insurance implementation, mental health support, and effective monitoring systems to ensure the safety and dignity of Nepali migrant workers overseas.
The issue also highlights the broader social and economic challenges that continue to push large numbers of Nepalis toward foreign employment despite the risks involved.
