Cryosphere Under Pressure: Glaciers, Snow, Permafrost and Water Security Are Now a Single Global Climate Story

Kathmandu, 31 July 2026 - The message captured in the phrase “Glaciers. Snow. Permafrost. Water. Livelihoods.” is no longer just a scientific slogan; it reflects one of the most urgent climate realities facing the world today.
Recent assessments by UNESCO, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), and ICIMOD show that glaciers are melting at unprecedented rates, snow cover is becoming less reliable, and permafrost thaw is accelerating across mountain regions. Together, these changes are disrupting the natural systems that store and release freshwater for billions of people.
The UN World Water Development Report 2025 identifies mountains as the planet’s “water towers,” supplying a major share of the freshwater used for drinking, irrigation, hydropower, and ecosystem health. Scientists warn that while glacier melt may temporarily increase river flows, the continued loss of ice will eventually reduce dry-season water availability and increase risks of floods, landslides, and glacial lake outburst floods.
For Nepal and the Hindu Kush Himalaya, the implications are particularly serious. The region supports nearly two billion people downstream, and ICIMOD reports that glacier retreat, shrinking snow cover, and thawing permafrost are already threatening food security, water security, energy production, and mountain livelihoods. The rapid retreat of glaciers such as Yala Glacier in Langtang has become a powerful symbol of the accelerating cryosphere crisis.
Climate experts emphasize that protecting mountain ecosystems now requires faster global emissions reductions, expanded glacier monitoring, stronger early warning systems, climate-resilient water management, and greater support for vulnerable mountain communities.
The emerging scientific consensus is clear: glaciers, snow, permafrost, water, and livelihoods are deeply interconnected. What happens in the world’s high mountains will increasingly shape the future of agriculture, energy, ecosystems, and human security far beyond the mountains themselves.
