Kathmandu - Government of Nepal has decided to restructure several ministries while maintaining the total number of ministries at 18 following a Cabinet meeting held on Wednesday.
According to the Cabinet decision, key ministries including the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers, Finance, Home Affairs, Foreign Affairs, Defence, Law, Industry, Culture, and Energy will remain unchanged. However, the government has introduced a new Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, signalling a greater policy focus on technological advancement, research, and innovation-driven development.
The government has also reassigned information technology-related responsibilities previously handled by the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology to the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers. Following the restructuring, the former ministry will now operate as the Ministry of Communication.
Several ministries have been reorganized under new structures and mandates. The Ministry of Education has been expanded into the Ministry of Education and Sports, while labour-related responsibilities have been merged under the Ministry of Youth, Labour and Employment.
Similarly, the government has formed the Ministry of Land, Cooperatives and Human Resources, and restructured the social welfare sector into the Ministry of Women, Children, Gender and Sexual Minorities and Social Security.
In another significant change, health and food-related responsibilities have been combined under the Ministry of Health and Food Security, while infrastructure-related functions will now be handled by the Ministry of Infrastructure Development. Environmental governance has also been consolidated through the newly reorganized Ministry of Agriculture, Forest and Environment.
The Cabinet restructuring is expected to influence administrative coordination, policy implementation, and sectoral governance priorities in the coming months, particularly in the areas of technology, environmental management, social protection, and infrastructure development.
