A seminar focused on Urban Ecosystem-based Adaptation (Urban EbA) and the dissemination of Urban EbA training materials was successfully held in Lalitpur on May 8, bringing together a wide range of stakeholders to promote climate-resilient and sustainable urban development in Nepal.
The program was jointly organized by UN-Habitat Nepal in collaboration with Kathmandu Valley Development Authority and United Nations Environment Programme. Representatives from government agencies, municipalities, academic institutions, development partners, urban practitioners, schools, and local communities participated in the event.
During the seminar, Urban EbA training and facilitation manuals developed by UN-Habitat were officially disseminated. The materials are aimed at supporting communities and local political leaders in advancing sustainable, inclusive, and climate-resilient urban development practices through nature-based solutions.
Speakers at the seminar highlighted increasing urban climate challenges such as urban heat stress, flooding, water scarcity, and environmental degradation. Participants emphasized the urgent need to integrate green spaces, urban forests, wetlands, and ecosystem-based approaches into urban planning and decision-making processes to strengthen climate adaptation and mitigation efforts.
A notable feature of the event was the participation of middle school students from community schools across the Kathmandu Valley. Students presented poetry under the theme “Our City, Our Environment,” expressing concern over pollution, environmental degradation, and the uncertain environmental future of cities while also sharing messages of hope, responsibility, and environmental stewardship.
The technical session included presentations by urban development and climate experts, including Rija Joshi, Anil Nepal, and Raju JATI. Their discussions focused on climate-responsive urban planning, adaptation to urban heat stress, and lessons learned from ecosystem-based adaptation initiatives in Nepal.
The seminar concluded with interactive discussions aimed at identifying practical ecosystem-based adaptation solutions and strengthening collaboration among stakeholders for the development of resilient and sustainable cities in Nepal.
The Urban EbA training materials are available through UN-Habitat Nepal.
