  • Nepal Urged to Expand EV Transition Amid Rising Fuel Crisis and Economic Vulnerability
Nepal Urged to Expand EV Transition Amid Rising Fuel Crisis and Economic Vulnerability

Kathmandu: Rising global fuel prices and growing economic uncertainty are intensifying calls for Nepal to accelerate its transition toward electric mobility and reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels.
An analysis published under the title “The Cost of Dependence” highlights how international conflict and volatility in West Asia are directly affecting Nepali households through soaring fuel prices, increased transportation costs, and pressure on the country’s broader economy.
According to the report, petrol prices in Nepal have climbed to around Rs217 per litre, while diesel prices have reached approximately Rs225 per litre. The sharp rise is affecting middle-class families, daily wage workers, students, ride-sharing drivers, and public transport operators, many of whom rely heavily on fuel-based transportation for their livelihoods.
The analysis warns that continued global instability could deepen economic hardship in Nepal. It references concerns that prolonged international conflict may reverse human development gains, increase poverty levels, and slow economic growth. Farmers are also facing additional burdens due to disruptions in fertiliser supply chains and increasing agricultural costs.
Despite the challenges, the report identifies Nepal’s growing adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) as a major opportunity. Nepal has emerged as one of the leading countries in South Asia in terms of EV adoption, particularly in the four-wheeler sector, where electric vehicles now account for a significant portion of new vehicle sales.
However, the article stresses that the benefits of the EV revolution have not yet reached all sections of society. While urban consumers are gradually shifting to electric cars, many lower-income citizens still depend on petrol motorcycles and expensive public transport systems.
The analysis calls on the government to prioritise nationwide charging infrastructure, especially in rural and semi-urban areas, and introduce affordable financing, subsidies, or low-interest loans for electric motorcycles and public transportation. It argues that Nepal’s energy transition must become inclusive rather than benefiting only wealthier vehicle owners.
In addition to transport reform, the report urges Nepal to diversify its economy and reduce excessive dependence on Gulf remittances and imported energy. Strengthening domestic employment opportunities and ensuring stable agricultural supplies are identified as critical steps toward long-term economic resilience and food security.
The article concludes that Nepal possesses strong potential for energy independence due to its clean energy resources and growing technological adoption. However, it warns that without bold structural reforms and wider access to electric mobility, the country will remain vulnerable to future global economic shocks.
