A new model of public sanitation is taking shape in Sundar Haraicha Municipality, where authorities and local stakeholders have introduced “smart public toilets” that go far beyond basic hygiene facilities. Designed as multifunctional public service hubs, these facilities integrate sanitation with learning, rest, and digital access.
Traditionally, public toilets in many parts of Nepal have been associated with poor maintenance, foul odors, and limited usability. However, the newly developed units in Sundar Haraicha challenge this perception. Users report a clean, well-maintained environment, marking a notable shift in how public sanitation infrastructure is experienced at the community level.
According to local stakeholders, the smart toilets include a range of additional amenities such as small library spaces, resting areas with seating management, bathing facilities, and on-site eateries. The inclusion of free WiFi, charging stations, and parking areas reflects an effort to align public services with evolving urban needs.
The initiative has been supported by the municipality in collaboration with the local Chamber of Commerce and Industry, with coordination led by Bhola Dulal and his team. While detailed technical specifications and funding structures have yet to be publicly disclosed, the concept itself is being widely appreciated as an innovative step toward improving public hygiene standards.
Urban planners and sanitation advocates have long emphasized the need for user-friendly, inclusive, and sustainable public toilet systems in Nepal. If effectively maintained and scaled, such models could contribute to improved public health, increased civic engagement, and enhanced urban aesthetics.
The Sundar Haraicha initiative also highlights the importance of shifting public attitudes-transforming sanitation spaces from neglected necessities into welcoming, multi-purpose community assets.
As Nepal continues its urban development journey, the success of such initiatives may inspire replication in other municipalities, promoting cleaner, smarter, and more inclusive public infrastructure nationwide.
