Four Spotted Deer Killed in Nepalgunj Zoo, Probe Committee Formed Amid Safety Concerns

Jamunaha, Nepal - A serious wildlife management lapse has come under scrutiny after four spotted deer were killed inside the Mahendra Park Zoo in Nepalgunj, prompting authorities to launch a formal investigation into the incident.
According to officials from Nepalgunj Sub-Metropolitan City, a four-member probe committee has been constituted to determine the exact cause and accountability behind the deaths. The committee, coordinated by Dipendra Shrestha, includes municipal staff, an engineer, and a veterinarian.
Night-Time Breach Leads to Fatal Attack
The incident occurred at the zoo located in Ward-8 of Nepalgunj, where approximately six stray dogs reportedly entered the premises during the night by crossing a weakened section of the eastern boundary wall. The dogs attacked a group of spotted deer (chital), killing two females, one male, and a fawn inside their enclosure.
This is not the first such occurrence. Earlier, an ostrich within the same zoo had been injured in a similar dog attack, raising broader concerns about recurring vulnerabilities in the zoo’s infrastructure and animal safety measures.
Authorities Acknowledge Infrastructure Failure
Mayor Prashant Bista admitted that the incident was likely caused by the deteriorated condition of the zoo’s boundary wall. He stated that immediate repair work would be initiated and that concerned authorities have been asked for clarification.
“The investigation committee will submit its report, and necessary actions will follow accordingly,” Mayor Bista said, emphasizing accountability and corrective measures.
Local Concerns Over Long-Ignored Risks
Local residents have long warned about the fragile and low structure of the zoo’s perimeter wall, claiming that stray animals can easily enter the premises. Despite repeated alerts to the municipal authorities regarding urgent repair needs, locals allege that their concerns were not adequately addressed.
Broader Implications for Urban Wildlife Management
The incident highlights systemic issues in urban wildlife management in Nepal, particularly in smaller municipal zoos where infrastructure maintenance, biosecurity, and animal protection protocols often remain under-resourced. Experts note that such lapses not only threaten captive wildlife but also raise ethical and governance concerns.
As the investigation progresses, conservationists and the public alike will be watching closely to see whether this tragedy leads to meaningful reforms in zoo management and urban biodiversity protection.
