Rising Heat Concerns: Scientists Warn 2026 Could Rank Among Hottest Years on Record

Kathmandu, Nepal - Growing scientific concern is emerging around global temperature trends as experts indicate that 2026 could become one of the hottest years ever recorded, driven by the combined effects of long-term climate change and a potentially strong El Niño phenomenon.
Recent assessments from international climate agencies and research institutions suggest that while it is not certain that 2026 will break all previous temperature records, there is a high probability it will rank among the top hottest years in modern history. Scientists attribute this trend primarily to the continued accumulation of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, coupled with natural climate variability.
The anticipated return of El Niño-characterized by the warming of surface ocean waters in the central and eastern Pacific-plays a critical role in this outlook. This phenomenon typically leads to a temporary spike in global temperatures, intensifying heatwaves, altering rainfall patterns, and increasing the likelihood of extreme weather events across different regions.
Some climate experts have warned of the possibility of a strong or even “super” El Niño event, which could further amplify global warming trends in 2026. However, researchers emphasize that such projections remain uncertain, as ocean-atmosphere interactions are complex and evolve over time.
Globally, early indicators point to above-average sea surface temperatures, a key signal associated with El Niño development. Meteorological agencies expect that these conditions could contribute to heightened climate extremes, including droughts in some regions and floods in others.
For South Asia, including Nepal, the implications could be significant. A strong El Niño has historically been linked with irregular monsoon patterns, which may affect agriculture, water resources, and livelihoods. Experts caution that weakened or erratic monsoon rainfall could pose challenges for food security and rural economies.
Climate scientists continue to stress that while natural phenomena like El Niño can temporarily elevate temperatures, the underlying driver remains human-induced climate change. The long-term warming trend has increased the baseline upon which such natural events operate, making each successive warm phase more intense than in previous decades.
As the world moves closer to 2026, researchers and policymakers alike are closely monitoring oceanic and atmospheric signals. The evolving situation underscores the urgency of strengthening climate adaptation strategies, especially in vulnerable regions like the Himalayas, where environmental changes have far-reaching consequences.
