Unpredictable Weather Patterns Trigger Rise in Seasonal Illnesses

Kathmandu, Nepal - Rapid and unpredictable weather fluctuations-marked by sunny mornings, intense afternoon heat, and sudden evening rainfall-are increasingly affecting public health across urban and semi-urban areas of Nepal.
Health observers note that such abrupt changes in temperature and weather conditions are leaving the human body struggling to adapt. As a result, there has been a noticeable rise in common seasonal illnesses, including cold and cough, respiratory complications, fever, and general fatigue.
Medical professionals explain that sudden shifts between heat and cold can weaken the body’s immune response. When the immune system fails to adjust quickly, individuals become more vulnerable to infections, particularly in environments with increased dust, humidity, and temperature variation.
The current weather pattern-combining heat, rainfall, and occasional windstorms within a single day-has created a challenging environment, especially for children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing respiratory conditions.
Public health recommendations emphasize simple but effective preventive measures. These include wearing light protective clothing during cooler hours, avoiding exposure to cold water and dust, promptly changing wet clothes after rainfall, and increasing the intake of warm fluids such as soups and hot water. The use of masks in dusty or windy conditions is also advised to reduce respiratory risks.
Experts further stress the importance of awareness and early precautions to prevent minor symptoms from developing into more serious health conditions, particularly during transitional weather periods.
As climate variability continues to influence daily weather patterns, health experts urge the public to remain cautious and adopt adaptive habits to safeguard their well-being.
