  • Waterfall on West Seti River Highlights Untapped Eco-Tourism Potential in Bajhang
Waterfall on West Seti River Highlights Untapped Eco-Tourism Potential in Bajhang

Bajhang, Sudurpashchim Province - A striking waterfall cascading along the West Seti River between Jyanti and Balaudi has drawn attention as a hidden natural asset in Saipal Rural Municipality. Located between Ward-4 and Ward-5, the site reflects both the ecological richness and the isolation that define Nepal’s far-western Himalayan region.
The waterfall plunges through a narrow rocky gorge, forming a turquoise pool below before continuing downstream. Surrounded by steep cliffs, sparse vegetation, and rugged terrain, the area represents a largely untouched ecosystem shaped by the powerful flow of the Seti River system-one of western Nepal’s major river basins.
According to available geographic data, Saipal Rural Municipality is one of the largest and least densely populated local units in Nepal, with vast mountainous terrain and limited infrastructure. This remoteness has preserved its natural beauty but also restricted access and development opportunities.
Environmental and Development Significance
The waterfall area holds strong potential for eco-tourism, nature-based research, and sustainable local development. However, experts emphasize that any future promotion must balance tourism with conservation. Fragile slopes, biodiversity, and water systems in high-altitude regions are particularly vulnerable to unplanned human activity.
At the same time, the West Seti River basin has long been part of national discussions on hydropower development, including the proposed West Seti Hydropower Project, highlighting the dual importance of the river for both energy and ecology.
Challenges on the Ground
Local stakeholders face several barriers in utilizing such natural assets:
Lack of road access and basic tourism infrastructure
Limited awareness and promotion at the national level
Risk of environmental degradation if development is unmanaged
Despite these challenges, such locations offer a glimpse into Nepal’s untapped natural heritage, especially in remote districts like Bajhang.
Way Forward
Environmental experts and development planners suggest:
Promoting community-based eco-tourism
Conducting environmental impact assessments before any infrastructure expansion
Strengthening local governance and conservation awareness
The waterfall on the West Seti River stands as a reminder that Nepal’s far-west still holds immense natural beauty-largely unexplored, yet increasingly significant in conversations about sustainable development.
