A discussion program focusing on the policy issues and challenges surrounding the sustainable management and trade of Himalayan medicinal herbs was successfully held in Kupondole, Lalitpur. The event was organized by the Federation of Community Forestry Users, Nepal, bringing together stakeholders from community forestry, policy sectors, and conservation fields.
The interaction aimed to shed light on the growing importance of non-timber forest products (NTFPs), particularly medicinal and aromatic plants found in Nepal’s Himalayan region, which serve as vital sources of income for local communities while also holding significant ecological value.FB_IMG_1774942427972-1774942495.jpg
Participants raised concerns over the lack of coherent and supportive policies to ensure sustainable harvesting, value addition, and fair trade practices. Despite Nepal’s rich biodiversity and global demand for herbal products, the sector continues to face regulatory ambiguities, weak market linkages, and challenges in maintaining quality standards.
Speakers emphasized the urgent need for policy reform that balances conservation with livelihood opportunities. They highlighted that unsustainable harvesting practices, illegal trade, and limited local processing capacity are undermining both ecological sustainability and economic potential.FB_IMG_1774942420725-1774942496.jpg
The discussion also stressed strengthening community-based forest management systems, enhancing capacity-building initiatives, and promoting research and innovation in the herbal sector. Ensuring equitable benefit-sharing mechanisms and improving access to national and international markets were identified as key priorities.
The program concluded with a shared commitment among stakeholders to advocate for clearer policies, improved governance, and collaborative approaches to harness the full potential of Nepal’s medicinal herb sector in a sustainable manner.
