Pokhara, July 30 (Ecosphere News) - Gandaki Province has launched Nepal’s first-ever Provincial State of Environment (SoE) Report, marking a significant milestone in the country’s efforts to strengthen evidence-based environmental governance and climate-resilient development.
The report was developed by the Gandaki Province Policy and Planning Commission with technical support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). It provides a comprehensive assessment of the province’s environmental condition and emerging ecological challenges.
According to the report, rising temperatures, increasing flood risks, drying water sources, deteriorating urban air quality, and growing pressure on ecosystems and natural resources are among the key environmental concerns facing Gandaki Province. The findings highlight the urgent need for coordinated policy responses and long-term environmental management strategies.
The provincial government stated that the report has been designed to achieve two major objectives.
Evidence-Based Planning and Monitoring
The SoE Report is intended to serve as a foundation for informed planning, implementation, and monitoring across all sectoral ministries of Gandaki Province as well as the Province Policy and Planning Commission. By providing reliable environmental data and analysis, it aims to support more effective decision-making and improve the integration of environmental considerations into development policies and programmes.
Strengthening Environmental Databases
Another key objective is to build a robust and centralised environmental database that can guide future developmental and environmental planning. Strengthening data systems is expected to improve monitoring of climate and environmental trends, support research, and enhance the province’s capacity to respond to emerging environmental risks.
As the first provincial State of Environment Report in Nepal, the initiative sets an important precedent for scientific, evidence-based environmental governance at the subnational level. Environmental experts have noted that the report could serve as a valuable model for other provinces seeking to establish similar environmental assessment and monitoring mechanisms.
The launch comes at a time when Nepal is experiencing increasing impacts of climate change, including extreme rainfall events, floods, landslides, water scarcity in vulnerable areas, and growing environmental stress in rapidly urbanising centres. Comprehensive environmental assessments such as the Gandaki SoE Report are considered essential for designing effective adaptation and resilience strategies.
UNDP has emphasised that building a prosperous and sustainable future begins with understanding and protecting the environment that sustains communities, livelihoods, and economic development.
