Kathmandu, Nepal - As the monsoon season approaches, Home Minister Sudhan Gurung has directed authorities to intensify preparedness efforts, stressing that safeguarding citizens must remain the state’s highest priority.
During a recent briefing at the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, Minister Gurung instructed officials to develop a comprehensive pre-monsoon preparedness and response action plan. He emphasized that disaster response mechanisms must be fully equipped with trained personnel and essential resources to respond swiftly and effectively.
Highlighting the urgency of proactive governance, Minister Gurung stated that the government should never hesitate to mobilize all available resources when citizens are in distress. “Saving lives is the foremost responsibility of the state,” he noted, underlining the importance of readiness for all forms of natural disasters, particularly floods and landslides that frequently impact Nepal during the monsoon season.
The minister also pointed to the need for long-term resilience through education. He called for the integration of disaster risk awareness into school and college curricula, along with the provision of basic disaster response training for students. According to him, empowering young people with practical knowledge can significantly strengthen community-level preparedness.
During the session, Dinesh Prasad Bhatt, Chief Executive Officer of the Authority, presented an overview of ongoing initiatives, key priorities, and the challenges faced in disaster risk reduction and management. The presentation highlighted the need for enhanced coordination, technological upgrades, and resource allocation to address increasing climate-induced risks.
Nepal remains highly vulnerable to climate-related disasters, with seasonal monsoon rains often triggering floods, landslides, and infrastructure damage across various regions. Experts believe that timely planning, community awareness, and institutional preparedness can play a crucial role in minimizing loss of life and property.
As the government moves to strengthen its disaster management framework, the emphasis on preparedness, education, and rapid response signals a more proactive approach toward building a resilient Nepal.
