  • Intensive Riverbed Extraction Raises Environmental Concerns Along Trishuli River
Intensive Riverbed Extraction Raises Environmental Concerns Along Trishuli River

Trishuli, Nepal - Increasing riverbed extraction activities along the Trishuli River have drawn attention from environmental observers and local communities, as multiple trucks are seen collecting sand, gravel, and stones directly from the riverbanks.
While such materials are essential for Nepal’s growing construction sector, experts warn that excessive and poorly managed extraction can severely disrupt river systems. The removal of natural sediments can alter water flow, deepen river channels unevenly, and accelerate riverbank erosion. These changes may heighten the risk of floods and negatively impact nearby agricultural land and settlements.
Local residents have reported noticeable shifts in the river’s natural course and growing concerns over dust pollution, noise, and declining water quality. The scale of extraction seen in recent observations has raised questions about whether existing environmental guidelines and licensing systems are being effectively enforced.
Environmental advocates stress that rivers like the Trishuli River are not just sources of construction materials but vital ecosystems supporting biodiversity and local livelihoods. They call for stronger regulation, regular monitoring, and sustainable extraction practices to ensure long-term ecological balance.
As Nepal continues to expand its infrastructure, the situation along the Trishuli River highlights a critical challenge-maintaining a balance between development needs and environmental conservation.
