The United Nations Environment Programme World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC) has launched its 2025 Impact Report, showcasing how science, international partnerships, and collaborative action are supporting global efforts to conserve biodiversity and integrate nature into decision-making across society and the economy.
Released in June 2026, the report outlines UNEP-WCMC's contributions during 2025, emphasizing that environmental progress remains possible despite growing global environmental and political challenges. It highlights the Centre's work in supporting governments, businesses, financial institutions, and local communities to implement biodiversity commitments and promote sustainable development.
According to the report, UNEP-WCMC strengthened scientific knowledge, expanded the use of biodiversity data and digital tools, and provided technical guidance for countries working toward the goals of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. The organization also collaborated with partners to improve nature-informed decision-making in sectors such as finance, conservation, and public policy.
The report highlights several achievements, including increased adoption of biodiversity assessment tools, support for ecosystem conservation initiatives, and efforts to integrate the value of nature into economic planning. It also recognizes the essential role played by governments, research institutions, civil society organizations, Indigenous Peoples, local communities, and funding partners in advancing these outcomes.
Among the examples cited is Nepal's community forestry programme, where community-managed forests continue to contribute significantly to forest conservation and sustainable land management through international cooperation and national initiatives.
UNEP-WCMC expressed appreciation to its global partners, funders, and wider community for their continued support and reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening evidence-based environmental policies and collaborative action for nature and people.
The Centre noted that achieving global biodiversity and sustainable development targets will require continued cooperation, scientific innovation, and sustained investment in nature conservation.
