A major new climate study has found that the Earth is warming significantly faster than it did during the late 20th century, raising fresh concerns about the pace of global climate change and the world’s ability to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement.
Researchers from the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) in Germany reported that, after removing the short-term effects of El Niño, volcanic eruptions, and solar cycles, the planet’s long-term warming trend shows a clear and statistically significant acceleration beginning around 2013-2015.
According to the analysis, the global temperature has increased at an average rate of approximately 0.35°C per decade over the past ten years, compared with just under 0.2°C per decade between 1970 and 2015. The acceleration was detected consistently across five major global temperature datasets with more than 98% statistical certainty, making it one of the strongest pieces of evidence yet that the underlying rate of global warming is increasing. The findings were published in the peer-reviewed journal Geophysical Research Letters.
The researchers used statistical techniques to isolate the human-driven warming signal from natural climate variability, allowing them to identify changes in the long-term trend that are often masked by year-to-year fluctuations in global temperature records. The recent warming rate is higher than that observed in any previous decade since modern instrumental temperature measurements began in 1880.
Climate scientist Grant Foster, co-author of the study, said the research demonstrates a “strong and statistically significant acceleration of global warming since around 2015.” The authors noted that while climate models have long suggested that warming could accelerate as greenhouse gas concentrations continue to rise, the new analysis provides direct observational evidence that such an acceleration is now detectable in real-world temperature records.
The study does not conclude that natural factors such as El Niño are unimportant; rather, it shows that even after those influences are removed, the underlying human-caused warming trend has become steeper. Scientists emphasize that the primary driver remains the continued accumulation of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases from fossil fuel combustion, deforestation, and industrial activities.
The findings come amid a series of recent global climate assessments showing record-breaking temperatures, intensifying heatwaves, heavier rainfall events, glacier retreat, and rising ocean heat content. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has also confirmed that recent years have been among the warmest ever recorded globally.
Researchers caution that whether this faster warming trend continues will depend largely on future global emissions. Rapid reductions in the use of coal, oil, and natural gas, combined with expanded renewable energy deployment and stronger climate adaptation measures, remain critical to limiting further temperature rise and reducing the risks of extreme weather, food insecurity, water stress, biodiversity loss, and other climate-related impacts.
