Debate Grows Among Scientists Over Pace of Global Warming

Kathmandu - While scientists widely agree that the Earth is warming due to human activities, an emerging scientific discussion is focusing on whether global warming is now accelerating faster than previously projected or if the recent surge in temperatures is partly the result of short-term natural fluctuations.
According to findings highlighted by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and several recent climate studies, global average temperatures have already risen by around 1.1-1.3 degrees Celsius since the late 19th century, largely due to increased emissions of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and methane from human activities including fossil fuel combustion, deforestation, and industrial processes.
Scientists note that the past decade has been the warmest period since modern temperature records began. Some researchers analyzing recent climate data suggest that the rate of warming during the last decade may be slightly faster than earlier climate model projections indicated. They point to factors such as steadily increasing greenhouse-gas concentrations, reduced air pollution particles that previously reflected sunlight, and climate feedback mechanisms like melting ice sheets and thawing permafrost.
However, other climate researchers caution that the recent spike in global temperatures could partly be linked to natural climate variability. Phenomena such as the warming phase of the Pacific Ocean known as El Niño can temporarily elevate global temperatures, while volcanic activity and solar variations can also influence short-term climate patterns.
Climate scientists emphasize that distinguishing between short-term fluctuations and long-term trends requires continuous monitoring and long-term datasets. Even so, there remains broad scientific consensus that human-induced greenhouse gas emissions are the dominant driver of the long-term warming trend.
Experts warn that if current emission trajectories continue, the global temperature rise could reach the critical 1.5-degree Celsius threshold identified in the Paris Agreement within the coming decade, increasing risks of extreme weather events, sea-level rise, biodiversity loss, and threats to livelihoods worldwide.
For countries like Nepal, which are highly vulnerable to climate impacts such as glacier melt, erratic rainfall, floods, and landslides, the scientific debate highlights the urgency of strengthening climate adaptation measures while contributing to global mitigation efforts.
Environmental analysts stress that regardless of short-term temperature variability, the long-term trajectory of global warming remains a significant concern for ecosystems, economies, and communities around the world.
