  • Joint Monitoring Conducted to Control Riverbed Extraction from Kali Gandaki in Baglung
Joint Monitoring Conducted to Control Riverbed Extraction from Kali Gandaki in Baglung

Baglung - Authorities in western Nepal have carried out a joint monitoring of riverbed material extraction along the Kali Gandaki River, aiming to ensure that the collection of sand, gravel, and stones remains within legal and environmentally responsible limits.
The inspection took place at the Kalakhola riverbank area in Baglung Municipality-13, where stakeholders including technical officials from Baglung Municipality observed the ongoing extraction of river-derived construction materials. The monitoring team assessed whether contractors operating in the designated riverbed area were complying with approved environmental and operational guidelines.
The joint inspection was conducted by representatives from the District Coordination Committee Baglung, the District Administration Office Baglung, and Baglung Municipality. According to officials, the monitoring focused on controlling excessive riverbed mining, which can threaten river ecosystems, increase erosion risks, and affect nearby settlements if not properly managed.
Riverbed materials such as sand, gravel, and stones are widely used in Nepal’s construction sector, but environmental experts have frequently warned that unregulated extraction from major rivers like the Kali Gandaki River can disrupt natural water flow, degrade aquatic habitats, and intensify flood vulnerability.
Local authorities said that regular inspections and coordinated oversight among district institutions are essential to balance infrastructure demand with environmental protection. Monitoring efforts are expected to continue in other river sections to ensure responsible management of natural resources.
