Kathmandu, 2 March 2026 - The festival of colors, Holi, is being celebrated with joy and enthusiasm today in the hilly and mountainous districts of the country. The government has declared a public holiday today on this occasion.
Holi is also known as Phagu Purnima, and the festival is regarded as a symbol of the victory of truth over falsehood, justice over injustice, and virtue over evil. According to Newar culture, there is a tradition of celebrating the festival by playing with colors and abir (colored powder) with relatives and friends in a spirit of love and harmony.
As in previous years, Holi is celebrated in the hilly and mountainous regions on the day of Falgun Shukla Purnima, while the Terai and Madhes districts traditionally celebrate the festival the following day.
According to the government’s decision, government offices and educational institutions, including those in the Kathmandu Valley and various hilly districts, remain closed today. Citizens have been encouraged to celebrate the festival in a safe and responsible manner.
In public messages, the President, Prime Minister, and senior political leaders have extended their best wishes to all, urging people to celebrate Holi in a dignified and safe manner while maintaining social harmony and brotherhood. Meanwhile, police and local administrations have warned against excessive crowding, unruly activities, and violations of the Election Code of Conduct.
The festival is not only a cultural celebration in Nepali society but also carries a message of cultural unity, reconciliation, and social tolerance. While playing Holi, people are seen forgetting past grievances and exchanging greetings and joy with renewed hope and positive energy.
