Western Low-Pressure System Brings Cloud Cover, Light Rain and Snowfall Across Parts of Nepal

Kathmandu, March 1, 2026 - A partial influence of a western low-pressure system in the upper atmosphere is currently affecting weather conditions across Nepal, according to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology.
The Weather Forecasting Division under the Department reported that cloudy conditions are prevailing in the hilly and mountainous regions of Koshi, Bagmati, and Gandaki provinces, as well as in the mountainous (हिमाली) areas of Lumbini, Karnali, and Sudurpashchim provinces. Other hilly regions of the country are experiencing partly cloudy skies.
Light rainfall and snowfall accompanied by thunder and lightning have been recorded at one or two locations in the hilly and mountainous areas of Koshi, Bagmati, and Gandaki provinces. Meanwhile, several places in the Terai belt are witnessing mist and haze, affecting visibility in the early hours.
Sunday Forecast
For Sunday, the Division forecasts morning fog in some parts of the Terai region. The country’s mountainous areas are expected to remain generally cloudy, while hilly regions will see partly cloudy conditions. The remaining areas are likely to experience fair weather, with the Terai expected to remain mainly clear after morning fog dissipates.
There is a possibility of light rain and snowfall with thunder and lightning at a few places in the mountainous regions of Koshi and Gandaki provinces, and at one or two locations in other mountainous areas. Similarly, isolated light rain with thunder and lightning may occur in the hilly regions of Koshi and Gandaki provinces.
Night Outlook and Advisory
Tonight, mist is likely to persist in some Terai areas. The mountainous regions of Koshi, Gandaki, and Karnali provinces are expected to remain generally cloudy, while hilly areas of Koshi and Gandaki and other mountainous regions will witness partly cloudy conditions. Other regions are likely to see fair weather.
The Division has urged residents in areas where fog, mist, rainfall, and snowfall are forecast to remain cautious. Authorities have also advised those operating vehicles and conducting daily activities in affected regions to take necessary safety precautions, particularly in areas prone to reduced visibility and slippery conditions.
Weather experts note that western disturbances during this season often bring brief but impactful changes in temperature and precipitation patterns, especially in Nepal’s mid-hill and high Himalayan regions.
