Kathmandu, Nepal - Ministry of Forests and Environment (MoFE), with technical and financial support from United Nations Development Programme Nepal, has published the draft Seventh National Report (7NR) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) for public consultation and stakeholder feedback.
The draft report outlines Nepal’s progress, policy measures, institutional reforms, and practical actions undertaken to conserve biodiversity and promote its sustainable use. It also assesses the country’s efforts to align national strategies with global biodiversity targets under the CBD framework.
According to MoFE, the report highlights key achievements in protected area expansion, community-based forest management, wildlife conservation initiatives, ecosystem restoration, and integration of biodiversity concerns into development planning. The document also reflects ongoing challenges, including habitat fragmentation, climate change impacts, invasive species, and balancing infrastructure development with ecological integrity.
The Seventh National Report is part of Nepal’s regular reporting obligation as a Party to the CBD. Such reports provide updates on national biodiversity status, implementation of the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP), and contributions toward global biodiversity goals.
MoFE has invited government agencies, conservation organizations, academic institutions, Indigenous and local communities, private sector representatives, and the general public to review the draft and submit their comments by 24 February 2026. The feedback received will be incorporated into the final version before its official submission to the CBD Secretariat.
Officials state that inclusive consultation is essential to ensure the report reflects ground realities and diverse perspectives. As Nepal is recognized globally for its rich biodiversity-from the Himalayas to the Terai plains-the country’s reporting process is seen as an opportunity to strengthen transparency, accountability, and evidence-based policy-making in the environmental sector.
Stakeholders can access the draft report and provide feedback through the official MoFE website.
Ecosphere News will continue to monitor developments related to Nepal’s biodiversity governance and its commitments under international environmental agreements.
